Equinox Awarded $50,000 Grant from The Hearst Foundations to Benefit Youth Programs

A generous $50,000 grant from The Hearst Foundations will help Equinox continue to address the complex needs of Albany’s at-risk youth through its Youth Outreach Center (YOC) and Mentoring Programs.  In addition to innovative substance abuse and HIV prevention programming--emphasizing healthy lifestyles and positive decision-making skills--the YOC provides crisis intervention services to meet critical needs such as food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and emergency shelter. Also available is short-term mental health counseling, visual arts and music opportunities, access to the internet and assistance with homework, resumes, and job applications. For many youth, the YOC is their first point of contact for referrals to services such as physical and mental health care, educational and vocational training, and stable housing. The YOC is also a conduit to the Equinox mentoring programs (for ages 13-24), which use a group mentoring approach to help participants improve health, enhance academic performance, build strong social skills, establish a sense of pride in themselves and their community, and become positive contributors to their peer groups, families, communities, and society.
